I mean good reasons to lose weight. Not what society tells us we should be losing weight for. You know, lose weight and you will instantly become irresistible to the opposite sex, get paid more and look great naked.
No, I’m talking real reasons to lose weight. Reasons that when you look back at what you have done you think YES!!! I’m so glad I did that!
1. Your knees will thank you
We kind of expect our joints to start acting up as we get older and probably know a few elderly people with very arthritic fingers. Having extra weight on us puts a lot of strain on our knees in particular and also our ankles, hips and elbows. Osteoarthritis is a degenerative condition where the bones grind together and cartilage is destroyed. We are more prone to it as we get older but it doesn’t have to be that way.
Lose the weight and lose the pain.
2. You will sleep better
Less weight means that you are more able to breathe when you are asleep. You will be less likely to snore AND you will be less likely to have sleep apnea.
Sleep apnea is where you stop breathing in your sleep. That might not bother you but it really does bother anyone in the bed with you. Just ask your significant other what it is like to be lying there thinking breathe, breathe, breathe, phew!
The more body fat you have, the more likely you are to have sleep apnea as the fat in your airway narrows the space available for the air to get through.
Lose the weight and you will have more oxygen, more energy, less insulin resistance and less risk of chronic disease.
3. Your sense of taste will improve
This one seems a bit weird but research shows that as we lose weight we become more sensitive to food tastes. This may also be related to the fact that we can breathe better because taste and smell are inextricably linked. Think about all those times you had a cold and everything you ate tasted like stewed knitting!
Certainly, if you stop eating sugar the chances are that you will lose weight and you will definitely notice the natural sweetness in your foods. There is some evidence that the more overweight you are, the more you avoid bitter foods like brussels sprouts in favour of sweet processed foods. The processed foods are designed to make us keep eating them. So losing weight could contribute to breaking a processed food addiction as well improving your sense of taste.
4. Your immune system will improve
The more weight you are carrying the more susceptible you are to colds, viruses and other infections. Fat cells release large amounts of chemicals that are associated with the immune system and this confuses the body so that it doesn’t respond to the real problems that are making you cough and wheeze.
5. If you lose weight you are more likely to survive surgery
Maybe this should be the number one reason to lose weight. It is a brutal fact that surgeons are very unwilling to carry out non urgent surgery on obese patients. It is more risky all the way from anaesthetic to recovery. Obese patients have a higher risk of complications as well.
Obese people are often more in need of surgery as they are more at risk of chronic diseases so this one seems really harsh.
So there you go – 5 really good reasons for losing weight which might not be what you were expecting.
